The North Carolina Department
of Insurance, Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the UNC Highway
Safety Research Center’s Child Passenger Safety Resource Center
(HSRC CPSRC) work together, along with the NC Governor’s Highway
Safety Program (GHSP) and local Child Passenger Safety (CPS) programs, to coordinate, facilitate,
and deliver CPS Basic Awareness and Certification training classes in North Carolina.
Check with the class "Contact" for additional information about the classes that are listed. Some
classes, especially Basic Awareness classes, may be full or closed
to persons outside of the sponsoring and/or host agencies.
The Safe Kids Worldwide
(SKW) is the certifying body for the National Standardized Child
Passenger Safety (CPS) Training Program. All registrations for certification classes must be made using the Safe Kids Certification online system.
Read Certification Class Registration for information on Safe Kids
Certification policies and procedures. Agencies and individuals interested in registering for a class should pay particular attention to the information about late fees, cancellations, “no-shows,” substitutions, and payment by credit card vs. by check.
Limited Scholarships Available for Certification Classes
The NC Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) is offering a limited number of scholarships to help students with lodging and meal expenses for GHSP/NC sponsored or co-sponsored certification classes. These scholarships are administered by and available through the NC Department of Insurance, Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM).
Eligibility criteria for these scholarships are that the individual must live at least 35 miles away from the training site and that travel expenses are not available through the student’s agency. The signature of the applicant’s supervisor on the application form is required for confirmation that the applicant meets these criteria.
Participants awarded scholarships are responsible for making their own hotel reservation and paying for lodging and meals. Allowable expenses are reimbursed after the class and after attendance for the entire class is confirmed by OSFM with the Lead Instructor. Meals and lodging will be reimbursed at state rates which are: Hotel: $63.75 + tax, Breakfast: $7.50, Lunch: $9.75, and Dinner: $16.75. Applicants approved for the scholarships will receive an e-mail confirmation with additional reimbursement information.
Certification classes for which all available scholarships have been awarded are noted by "No Scholarships Available" following the Safe Kids ID number on the class schedule.
Applications for scholarships must be submitted and approved prior to the class for which they are being requested and must be submitted on the NC Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification Training Scholarship Request form.

However, registrations for courses are not complete and a seat will not be held until payment is received. Persons who choose to pay, or who MUST pay, by check or purchase order through the mail may lose their seat to someone who registers and pays with a credit card. Also late fees may be charged for individuals completing the registration and payment process by check or purchase order through the mail.
If paying by check, be sure to have the check cut and sent in as quickly as possible. In addition, it is highly recommended that checks be delivered to CPS Certification customer service via express mail/next day delivery that requires a signed receipt upon delivery.

Renewal Class
Schedule |
Technicians
whose certifications have expired are eligible to take the
8-hour Certification Renewal Course. After successfully
completing this class, students will be re-certified as CPS
Technicians without having to take the complete Certification
course.
The Renewal Course provides a brief overview
of the technical information contained in the most
recent version of the NHTSA curriculum, verifies technical
skills through hands-on testing, and assesses CPS knowledge
through an on-site written test.
This is NOT an update/refresher class.
This course is meant for expired CPS Technicians who have
maintained their child passenger safety knowledge and their
hands-on skills. It is expected that students attempting to
renew their certifications stayed involved in CPS programs
and activities, have kept up with changes in the field by
reading technical updates, attending other CPS classes, and
working with non-expired technicians to keep their installation
skills current, but who - for one reason or another - allowed
their certifications to expire.
Individuals
who do not meet these criteria should not expect to pass the
Certification Renewal Course.
Refer to additional
registration information included under the Certification
Class Schedule above. |

NC
Basic Awareness Classes
The goal of North Carolina Child Passenger
Safety (CPS) Basic Training course is to create an awareness of
the importance of child passenger safety education in preventing
deaths and injuries to children in car crashes and to provide participants
with basic CPS knowledge and hands-on practice. The focus of this
program is primarily on child restraints, but seat belt use for
children and adults is discussed as well.
Students in Basic Awareness classes,
usually taught over a two-day period, develop basic child passenger
safety technical skills and have a basic standard of knowledge.
Participation in these classes does not result in a formal certification.
Contact the person listed for each class for registration information.

Transportation
of Children with Special Health Care Needs Classes
"Safe Travel for All Children: Transporting Children with
Special Health Care Needs" is designed to serve as an enrichment
course for child passenger safety technicians who are interested
in learning more about special needs transportation. The training,
which lasts approximately a day and a half, combines classroom lectures
and discussions with hands-on exercises. During the training, participants
will be introduced to medical conditions that can impact restraint
selection and have the opportunity to investigate and install specialized
restraint systems. The training concludes with a proficiency exam
that evaluates the student's ability to assess appropriate restraints
and to demonstrate proper use and installation.
"Safe
Travel for All Children: Transporting Children with Special Health
Care Needs" was developed by the Automotive Safety Program
at Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University School of Medicine,
with funding from the National Safety Council.
Persons in North Carolina interested in learning more about the
transportation of children with special health care needs training
should contact Vickie Whitlatch, Western NC Safe Kids at Mission Hospitals
in Asheville by phone: 828-213-5554 or email: victoria.whitlatch@msj.org
